Budget Update — The Governor signed the state budget last week without any vetoes. Overall this was a relatively good budget year for CAES. New positions, restoration of some past cuts, and funds for buildings and equipment were all included as additions to the CAES budget. This was still a difficult year for legislators since healthcare changes loomed over the entire process. So, I am quite pleased with the additions to our budget in light of the difficulties. Unfortunately, salary increases were not included, despite the best lobbying efforts of President Adams and incoming President Morehead. There is still a little flexibility, so we have not written off salary assistance, but it looks like any across the board increase will have to wait until next year. There will be more on this in a few weeks.
Incoming President Morehead — The Chancellor convened a meeting with incoming President Morehead hosted by Ag Commissioner Gary Black. The purpose of the meeting was to make sure our new president understands the importance of the agriculture industry to Georgia. He got this message loud and clear and has indicated he intends to be a friend to rural Georgia and agriculture. I have reported to Provost Morehead for the past several years and have served on his transition team. From everything I have seen and heard, we have good reason to be excited about his leadership.
As this academic year comes to a close I want to thank all faculty and staff for their efforts over this past year. We appear to have made it through some quite difficult times in as good of shape as possible. This is only because of your hard work and for that I am very grateful. I believe we have turned the tide and can look forward to good years ahead. We all know too well that economies go up and they go down, but for now, we appear to be on the upswing. Have a great summer.
