AWARDS & HONORS
Faculty recognized at National 4-H Agents Conference
Three University of Georgia 4-H professionals were recognized as national partnership award winners at the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents’ 63rd annual conference held Oct. 25-29, 2009 in Rochester, New York.
Bo Ryles, retired state 4-H leader/director, was honored with the Air Force Recruiting Salute Award. Casey Mull, state 4-H military liaison, was honored with the 4-H/Army Youth Development Project Salute Award. Amber Defore, Camden County 4-H agent, was honored with the inaugural 4-H/Navy Pledge Award. All three awards were presented as part of a National 4-H and Military Partnership. This is the first year that representatives from one state have won all the 4-H/Military Partnership awards.
The Air Force Recruiting Salute Award is presented to the NAE4-HA member who has created a positive Extension image through his leadership and citizenship as it relates to the development of the 4-H program.
The 4-H/Army Youth Development Project Salute Award recognizes the individual who has created a positive Extension image through leadership and citizenship as it relates to the development of 4-H/Army partnerships on US Army garrisons worldwide.
The 4-H/Navy Pledge award recognizes the NAE4-HA member for their exceptional or extraordinary contributions that have made a significant impact on the lives of Navy children, youth and families. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated their honor, courage and commitment and who has created a positive Extension image through leadership and citizenship as it relates to the development of the 4-H/Navy partnership on US Navy bases or in the community as it pertains to Navy Reserve families and children.
NAE4-HA is a globally recognized, culturally diverse network for 4-H youth development professionals. Membership is open to local, regional, state or national Cooperative Extension staff members who work with 4-H youth programs.
Allan Armitage awarded George Robert White Medal of Honor
On Oct. 1, MassHort will continue its almost century-long tradition of honoring superior achievements in horticulture when Elm Bank hosts the 2009 Honorary Medals Dinner, with the University of Georgia’s Allan Armitage receiving the George Robert White Medal of Honor.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost horticulturists, Armitage is a professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, where he teaches, conducts research on new garden plants, and runs the University of Georgia Horticulture Gardens. He is generally credited with creating the concept of the independent trial garden, the first one of which opened in Athens in 1982. He is the author of 10 books, including “Armitage’s Native Plants for North American Gardens” and “Armitage’s Garden Annuals.” He has been cited as one of the 10 most influential people or organizations in the floriculture industry. Ken Lewis named the District Extension Director for Southwest District.
Please join me in congratulating Ken Lewis on being named the District Extension Director for Southwest District. Ken has been serving as the interim director since April 1, 2009, and is providing excellent leadership for the district. Ken has graciously agreed to take on the responsibility for leadership of the district on a permanent basis until his projected retirement in the spring of 2012. We greatly appreciate his willingness to serve in this capacity, particularly in these challenging budgetary times.

September 30, 2009, is the last day of official (full time) UGA/CAES employment for
twelve of our Extension colleagues. The following individuals elected to participate in the latest VERA program and tomorrow they will move into an exciting new phase of life called retirement/semi-retirement (some will return to Extension for a one year period as rehires). Tony Tyson named interim DED for Southeast District
Tony Tyson, Director of County Operations, will serve as the interim District Extension Director for Southeast District for the month of October. Please contact Tony with questions/concerns regarding Southeast District during this period of time. Lannie Lanier will return to service as the District Director (part time capacity) beginning November 1, 2009. We hope to advertise and fill this position in late spring/early summer of 2010.
Al Parker named 4-H Program Development Coordinator
Northeast District would like to announce that Al Parker has accepted the position of
4-H Program Development Coordinator for Northeast District effective November 1, 2009. Al brings a strong overall background in 4-H as well as extensive experience in working with county, district and state 4-H functions.

United Way Cardboard Boat Race
On Saturday, Sept. 19, the UGA Griffin Campus participated in the 2nd Annual United Way Cardboard Boat Race held at Dundee Lake Park. Many thanks go out to all of the UGA Griffin Campus supporters who were there in bad weather to cheer our team on, and special thanks to those who designed, built, painted and paddled our USS Bulldawg to a 2nd place finish. Von Baker (Fulton County Extension Agent) is the proud mother of an 8 lbs. 3 oz baby girl named Tristan. The Halloween baby entered this world on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 4:11 p.m. Mom and baby are doing fine.
Brent and Mandy Marable (State 4-H Faculty - Athens) welcomed John David Marable to their family on Tuesday, Sept. 15. John David weighed in at 9 lbs. and measured 22 inches long. John David has an older brother, Jack Durham.
