Protecting Families against Pesticide Risks
People unintentionally expose their families to unnecessary risks because they do not know how to manage household pests properly. The results can be tragic if pesticides are misused. Millions of Georgians do not read well, and Spanish is the primary language for many of our citizens.
UGA entomologists collaborated with faculty in the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences to address this problem. The FACS faculty members have established links with these audiences and they have experience in developing materials for these clients. Together, they developed a series of publications about integrated pest management for household pests. The topics include roaches, flies, stored product pests, rodents, ants, mosquitoes, fleas and pesticide safety. All of the publications are available in English and Spanish. The next step has been a collaboration with public libraries across Georgia. About 25 libraries participated in the pilot. They are expanding the project to at least 100 libraries.
