Biotechnology

Teaching Biotechnology in Griffin

An active research program is crucial for University of Georgia faculty not only in funding, tenure and promotion, but also for providing opportunities to enrich the undergraduate student experience. A UGA insect geneticist on the Griffin Campus has received funding to equip the first undergraduate LI-COR centered molecular research lab, and the development and instruction of five junior and senior level classes. An undergraduate research laboratory has been developed in which state-of-the-art biotechnology supports a laboratory curriculum and an undergraduate insect genetics research program that complements undergraduate research in the lab. Initial curricula have been developed and/or adapted according to established curriculum in plant genetics, evolutionary biology, genetics, biotechnology, undergraduate research, and special problems. An advising schedule has been established for biology majors on the Griffin Campus. The first high school research student in insect genetics was mentored under the auspices of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences 2006 Young Scholars Program. The undergraduate research laboratory on the Griffin Campus is fully automated and provides students not only with state-of-the-art biotechnology, but state-of-the-art educational technical support. The teacher-student ratio is small and promotes a rigorous and supportive learning atmosphere on the Griffin Campus. Talented students are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research in insect genetics. This in turn better prepares them for graduate studies in molecular entomology and other scientific fields. (2006)
