Childhood Health

Basic Health and Safety

Every 42 seconds, a child or youth under the age of 20 in the U.S. dies from an accident. The Early County Extension family and consumer sciences agent partnered with Early County Head Start to provide six hours of employee training using the curriculum, Teaching Basic Health and Safety to Children. Fourteen Early County Head Start employees attended the one-day training. All the employees indicated they would be more likely to teach young children to dial 911 in an emergency situation, 92 percent intend to teach children how to prevent injuries and accidents at home, and 100 percent plan to teach the importance of hand washing, healthy eating and exercise to the children in their classrooms. This knowledge will greatly assist teachers in helping students learn safe and healthy habits to prevent injury and illness. (2006)
