Childhood Health

Collaborating Community Resources

Due to the increasing rates of childhood obesity across the country, Screven County 4-H joined forces with local community collaborative partners to support the need of additional nutrition education and participation in schools. A group of community leaders from various resource organizations were brought together to form the Screven County School Health Advisory Committee. This committee was responsible for developing and implementing a school Wellness Policy in accordance to Federal Law 108-265. The Screven County 4-H Agent was a key stakeholder in both the development and implementation of the Screven County School System Wellness Plan. Adequate nutrition education is delivered to the students through traditional health education courses, physical education courses and the Screven County 4-H program. The Screven County 4-H program delivered quality healthy lifestyle and nutrition education on a monthly basis to the entire 5th grade during each school year. A total of 184 students received a 1-hour nutrition lesson for five consecutive months. (2006)
