Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Poor nutrition, inactivity and weight problems among students hurts academic achievement. At the same time, healthy eating and exercise help to reduce the risk of chronic disease. Bibb County Extension staff chose its 2004-2005 in-school 4-H curriculum theme:  "Healthy Lifestyles – Healthy Lifestyle Choices."  They used a curriculum entitled "The Power of Choice," the 4-H Foods Project Activity Guide and various audio visual and printed media. Individual lessons included Healthy Lifestyles Decisions, Nutritional Tidbits, Exercise: Get up and Move, Healthy Body – Healthy Mind and Winning the Fight Against Smoking. As part of the curriculum, students were provided literature, watched associated videos and completed various exercises during the 4-H session. Nearly 3,000 5th and 6th grade Bibb County 4-H Club students were given oral presentations and provided printed information regarding various aspects on topics leading to a healthy lifestyle. (2006)
