Bilingual Program Teaches Life Skills
Since 2000, the Hispanic population in metro Atlanta has increased by 362 percent. This rapidly growing population combined with ethnic and cultural diversity issues of DeKalb County presents new challenges and opportunities for local agencies that serve this population. Working in collaboration with local agencies and community groups, DeKalb County Cooperative Extension developed a culturally sensitive Bilingual Outreach Program to educate low-income Hispanics. These educational programs focused on meal planning, food safety, grocery shopping skills, financial management, job skills, housing, textiles and clothing, and human development (parenting). The Basic Life Skills program reached 525 participants. (2006)
