Alternative Fuels

Economic Impact of an Ethanol Plant

Sources of alternative energy are generating interest among private investors. An ethanol plant is proposed for construction in Mitchell County. The Mitchell County Development Authority is seeking to assist private investors in obtaining a One Georgia Grant for construction capital. So the Authority requested that the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development conduct an economic impact analysis of an ethanol plant in Mitchell County. Research results indicate that operation of an ethanol plant in Mitchell County generates $195.6 million in annual output. This leads to 290 jobs in Mitchell County that pay a total of $7.6 million in wages and benefits. Economic impacts extend beyond Mitchell County and generate additional economic benefits throughout Georgia. The research results have been used by Mitchell County in submitting a grant request for construction of the ethanol plant. (2006)
