Water and Drought
Hydrologic Sciences Education
Soil science and hydrology are perhaps the most basic natural sciences upon which all resource management ultimately depends. Production constraints and environmental regulation increasingly force managers to incorporate more complex processes into their decision-making. The interactions of soil and water constitute the basis for many of these decisions. An integrated soil and water management course, Soils and Hydrology, is being used to give agriculture and forestry students a basic understanding of fundamental resource management techniques and strategies for maximizing food and fiber production while minimizing environmental impacts. It is a joint offering of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Warnell School of Forest Resources. The course has been offered for nearly 10 years, and has been constantly revised based on in-class experience and student comments. Enrollment has risen over the years to about 200 students per year.
