Water and Drought

Drought Monitoring

Drought has affected the state since spring 2006, causing more than $1 billion in losses in the agriculture sector of the economy alone. The availability of water has become a major socioeconomic problem for Georgia. The state climatologist has continuously monitored the developing situation and has kept the public and government officials informed of deteriorating conditions. He has issued numerous drought press releases, conducted press conferences, presented many workshops across the state to the cattle industry, co-chaired the state drought response committee which sets drought response levels, and is serving as part of the state interagency joint command. Through these efforts, the impacts of the drought have been lessened. (2007)
