Water and Drought

Coping with Water Restrictions

A continued drought has left homeowners and green industry professionals scratching their heads as to how to keep landscape plants alive with little or no water. Using scientific, researched based information, UGA horticulturists delivered techniques and principles for coping with drought in the landscape to homeowners and landscapers through a number of media efforts. They prepared a series of statewide radio spots to reach a large audience through Georgia to inform them on the latest methods of conserving moisture in the landscape. A Wimba horizon training on Xeriscape landscaping techniques was taught to a large Master Garden audience. Numerous articles written for popular magazines and local newspapers covered plant selections and tips for conserving water in the landscape. The horticulturists developed a Best Management Practices manual for landscapers covering water conservation and quality. While serving on the Drought Task Force, they updated information on drought management on the web. Through various media efforts, thousands of Georgia residents have been educated on landscape management practices for drought conditions. (2007)
