2012 D.W. Brooks Diversity Award - Faculty

Leticia S. Sonon serves as the program coordinator for the Soil, Plant and Water Laboratory at the University of Georgia Agricultural and Environmental Services Laboratories.

Sonon obtained her bachelor's degree in soil science from the Visayas State University in the Philippines. She earned her master's degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and her doctoral degree in soil chemistry from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.

Sonon started at UGA in 2004 and has established herself as a leader in soil, plant and water testing. Prior to coming to UGA, she spent 23 years working in an analytical laboratory in various capacities: soil analyst, graduate student and post-doctoral researcher, a faculty member and soil testing laboratory manager.

She has authored and coauthored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, Extension bulletins, book chapters and is an active member of several scientific and professional societies.

In addition to her supervisory role at the lab, she is involved in various projects at the local, national and international levels that encourage diversity of the workforce and the enhancement of agricultural education for nontraditional and disadvantaged groups.
