Department: Animal and Dairy Science
A native of Enigma, Ga., farm manager Mike Mathis earned bachelor's and masters degrees in animal science from the University of Georgia. He began his career with the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences on the Tifton campus where he worked as a research technician on the dairy farm. He later transferred to the beef unit.
In 1999, Mike became the manager of the Wilkins Beef Cattle Research Unit in Athens. There he manages a 700-acre farm with some 500 acres of pasture and hay fields. This facility houses a pure-bred Angus herd of more than 100 cows. Mike manages the farm’s feedlot facility and individual feeding stalls for 40 hear of cattle, as well as multiple feeding pens for backgrounding calves and feeding bulls.
ADS research faculty rely on Mike to independently manage animals on the farm, located 30 miles from the UGA main campus. In the past three years alone, Mike's service has been crucial to two PhD dissertations, four master's theses and 12 research publications.
