Introduction to Communication in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

Effective Oral Communication (2nd Edition), Cheek, Arrington, Rudd, and McGhee

Course:
This course focuses on both written and oral communication in the general following format:

Weeks 1 through 3: Written Communication: Conceptual thinking, developing thoughts, thematic and topic sentences, clear and concise writing habits (expository prose, reports, memos, pr announcements, news columns)

Weeks 4 through 7: Oral Communication: Process of communication; preparing, organizing, wording, and delivering oral presentations; types of speeches (informative speeches, conducting business meetings)

Weeks 8 through 10: Written Communication: Expanding the written communication process through more detailed and developed writing (persuasive argument paper, research paper outlines and discussions)

Weeks 11 through 14: Oral Communication: Practical applications of oral communication theories and techniques, listening, meeting the media (large and small group communication, persuasive speeches, interview projects, resume writing and cover letters; negotiating agreements)

Week 15: Summary week: Review the overall concepts of communicating, both through writing and speaking; communication as a leadership tool (making positive impressions via both written and oral communication)

Grading:
Students' final grade will be a summary of the recorded grades on papers and oral presentations during the semester.

Attendance and Assignments:
Students are expected to attend class, and are expected to complete assignments on time. It is the responsibility of each student to know about assignments, with absence from class not an excuse for missing an assignment.

Make-up Policy:
Students may make up assignments and examinations, given that they have a valid reason for having missed them.
