Objectives of course:

Gain an understanding of agricultural ecosystems and factors contributing to productivity and sustainability such as climate, crop germplasm, soils, energy, and management.
Appreciate the problems of human population growth, world food problems, and food sources.
Survey of major tropical, subtropical, and temperate crops in respect to origin, adaptation, use, and world distribution.

Course assignments:

All students: photocopied lecture notes, readings from handouts, lectures, and class discussion.
Graduate students: written in-depth review paper on topic in crop ecology.

Course requirements for grading purposes:

All students: three hour exams and a comprehensive final exam.
Graduate students: written term paper due one week before last scheduled class.

Attendance policy:

Not required but highly recommended to receive benefit of visual presentations and discussion by other students. Students with excellent attendance and discussion participation will receive positive consideration if their final grade is borderline between two letter grades.

Required text:

None. Students are furnished a complete photocopied unpublished crop ecology book updated each year.

Policy for make-up examinations:

Make-up exams available only for health problems or university authorized trips.
