Academics: Programs of Study

Pre-Professional Programs

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences pre-professional programs provide methods for undergraduate students to prepare for professional school while earning a degree in an existing field of agricultural and environmental science. In this manner, students can major in a relevant career-oriented scientific discipline while perfecting learning skills that will assist them in their advanced degree programs.

The University of Georgia does not offer a degree with a major in pre-law or pre-medicine therefore students should work with their academic advisors to choose a specific degree and major. Students in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences who are interested in attending a professional school should seek advice from our college pre-law or pre-medical advisor. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences does not have a foreign language requirement.

Pre-Law

Most law schools suggest exposure to other disciplines that are useful in practicing and studying law, therefore students should incorporate functional courses from existing undergraduate programs of study into their schedules. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' pre-law program provides a method for undergraduate students to prepare for law school while earning a degree in an existing field of agriculture and environmental science. In this manner, students can major in a relevant career-oriented scientific discipline while perfecting learning skills that will assist them in law school or other advanced degree programs. Students also have the opportunity to receive a minor in Environmental Law.

Pre-Medicine

In almost all cases, baccalaureate degrees are required for admission to schools of medicine. At the University of Georgia, "pre-med" is not a major, so students who plan to attend medical school should select a major and follow regular degree programs. It is critical that course selection includes both those science courses needed to assure a good score on the standardized admissions tests and course prerequisites for admission to medical school which you are interested in applying. In addition to meeting with your academic advisor, you will need to visit with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences pre-med advisor. Contact our Office for Academic Affairs in 102 Conner Hall for that information after being enrolled.

Because of the stringent science requirement in our college, students eagerly pursue several different majors to earn their undergraduate degree while applying to medical school. These may include:

In addition, students are encouraged to have work experience in a veterinary practice before or during college.
