Biological Science

Requirements

This major provides a very flexible program of study that prepares you for graduate and professional study and for careers in business, industry or government. A biological science major is a perfect fit if you are interested in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, cellular biology, and/or ecology. If you are interested in entering medical or veterinary school, this major may be of interest to you.

Practical Experiences

There are many "hands on" opportunities to enhance your academic studies while in college including internships and our Undergraduate Research Initiative.

Internships are available for students who what to gain practical work experience by allowing them to use the classroom as a formal work experience. Students may take part in semester-long internships, on or off campus, and in most cases are paid as an employee of the company. In addition, you will earn academic credit while clarifying career goals.

The Undergraduate Research Initiative is open to all College of Agricultural and Environmental Science students and provides a personal learning environment. Students can work side by side with faculty, technicians and graduate students helping create new knowledge in agricultural and environmental sciences. You can earn academic credit and concentrate on a specific topic, either in classes or other studies, while working with a faculty member in his or her laboratory.

Career Opportunities

Illustration: CAES Lab DogA degree in biological science can lead to a variety of careers or graduate studies including health, medicine, food technology, natural resources, veterinary medicine and the environment. Careers relating to research and development and/or manufacturing await you in genetic engineering, biotechnology, biomedical and pharmaceutical companies, food safety, chemical companies, safety and testing, medical support, consumer health and safety or as lab technicians. Marketing and sales of human and animal pharmaceuticals, laboratory equipment, biotechnology supplies, medical products and other research equipment are wide-open careers. Many graduates obtain advanced Masters and Doctorate degrees and/or enter medical, pharmacy, veterinary or dental school. Other possibilities include careers in science education, agricultural science or in the Extension service.

Opportunities for work within the biological science field will continue to grow as an increasing human population demands more food, fiber, and wood products, health care, and environmental stewardship.
