The Deans' Promise

The Deans’ Promise is a unique program in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. It gives students the opportunity to participate in five different focus areas like Study Abroad, Internships, Service-Learning, Leadership, and Research.

Study abroad programs allow students to travel around the world. You could find yourself studying international business and relations in Armenia, boating down the Amazon in Brazil, or touring vineyards in Italy. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences also offers students the option of earning a certificate of international agriculture.

Many students chose to gain valuable work experience through internships. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences offers hundreds of internship opportunities with varying lengths and job descriptions. These opportunities include the Congressional Fellowship program in Washington D.C. and the Brussels internship in Belgium. If you prefer to stay close to home, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency internship here in Athens may be a better choice for you.

One of the college’s missions as a land-grant university is to give back to the community. The Service Learning portion of the Deans’ Promise allows students to take the knowledge they gain in the classroom and use it to help others in the community. One example is project FOCUS where students in a science-related field partner with an elementary school teacher and spend three hours a week in the classroom. Another opportunity allows students to help landscape homes around Athens.

There are many opportunities in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences which help train you as a personal and professional leader. The Interdisciplinary Certificate in Leadership and Service allows students to gain skills in personal, team, organizational, and professional settings. If you enjoy social events, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Ambassadors may be a perfect fit for you. The Ambassadors assist the college in recruitment and on-campus events. If you enjoy student government, participating in Ag Hill Council may be right for you.

Research is another way students can enhance their learning experience while here at the University of Georgia. Through the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ Undergraduate Research Initiative, students can learn in both laboratory and field-based research settings. This allows a first hand learning experience by working side-by-side with UGA faculty doing cutting-edge research.

The Deans’ Promise is the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ commitment to allow each student an academic experience beyond the classroom. Let the Deans’ Promise help enhance your college experience to one that’s not only enjoyable, but one that allows you to grow academically, professionally, and personally.
