Administration: Meet the Dean

Angle's Update

A weekly report from Dean & Director J. Scott Angle

August 29, 2005

I want to take a few minutes to discuss development or fund-raising. Currently, the College's Office of Advancement is without a director, having lost our director to Clemson. A search is underway and applications are due September 1, 2005. I hope we can fill this position as quickly as possible.

It has been made clear to me by the Provost and President that our College needs to focus on development more than in the past. We need a more balanced portfolio of funding that includes a higher percentage of funds garnered via development. There are many development opportunities for the College and with a concerted effort should materialize.

Development is not an effort on the part of the campus or Dean's Office to sweep in funds for administration. Instead these funds can be used at the discretion of the donor. To date, development has had little interaction with Cooperative Extension. Since Extension has more local contacts than any other component of the University, Mel Garber and I are discussing now to increase activity in this area. Please know that funds can be held at the local level to support your programs, used to support county activities, or if targeted to a department, used to support individual faculty.

Although there are few discretionary funds in the College, I plan to increase the number of development officers working for the College. I believe that this will have a rapid payback for the College.

Only one word of caution. If you believe you have a contact that might be interested in a donation, please contact the Office of College Advancement before raising the possibility with a donor. Critical mistakes made early on can reduce the value of a gift over the long term. There is a "science" to development that must be factored into the process.

As always, if you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know but as soon as possible.
