George Harris King

• Born: November 14, 1900, West Plains, Missouri
• Died: July 12, 1980
• Honored: October 15, 1976

Occupation: Principal and teacher of vocational agriculture at Winder, Georgia; professor of rural education at the University of Georgia; president of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College; director of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station; and director of experiment stations in the College of Agriculture, University of Georgia.

Accomplishments: Dr. King organized one of the first Future Farmers of America chapters in Georgia and was named "Master Agriculture Teacher." He initiated evening class programs in vocational agriculture in the state. He attracted an outstanding team of state and federal scientists to Tifton, Georgia, making the Coastal Plain Experiment Station one of the best known experiment stations in America. He was named Progressive Farmer magazine's Man of the Year; received an honorary doctors degree from Clemson University; was made a life member of the Georgia Plant Food Education Society; and received a distinguished service award from the Georgia Crop Improvement Association.
