The Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame

J.G. Woodroof

  • Born: 1900, Meriwether County, Georgia
  • Died: November 6, 1998
  • Honored: October 9, 1992

Occupation: Researcher at the Georgia Experiment Station; first president of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College; horticulturist for the U.S. Resettlement Administration.

Accomplishments: Dr. Woodroof organized and was the first chairman of the Department of Food Science in the College of Agriculture. In addition to his research in food science, he spearheaded the development of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in Food Science at the University of Georgia. He has written many books. He is an Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Food Science; winner of the Outstanding Alumni Award from Michigan State University; and recipient of the Nicolas Appert Award and the Donald K. Tressler Award from the Institute of Food Technologists.
