News: Southscapes Fall 2008
Alumni Line
From Four Towers
Dear CAES Friends and Alumni,
Each of us has our own personal reasons for feeling connected to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia. Many of you became involved through 4-H. Others are connected by the years you spent studying on Ag Hill and attending classes on South Campus. Still others may have spent years working for CAES in teaching, research or extension. Whatever the reason, many of you, like me, feel a deep connection to this vastly important institute of higher education.
My love for agriculture started early on the family farm in Seminole County. Later, I attended Berry Schools and UGA CAES. My career in agriculture included working as a County UGA Extension agent in Telfair County for 5 years and working with the Georgia Department of Agriculture from 1965 until my retirement in 1991. Today, I remain involved in agriculture and I'm extremely delighted to be serving as President of the CAES Alumni Association.
This grassroots organization has supported agriculture for more than 55 years through its mission: "to support strong programs of teaching, research and extension; bring about a closer spirit of fellowship and cooperation among students, alumni and faculty of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; guide and recruit young people to pursue careers in the agricultural sciences; and support agribusiness for the purpose of developing a sound and profitable agriculture in Georgia."
While faces and names may change, the mission of the CAES Alumni Association has remained the same, and so has the need for active and engaged volunteers. If you have ties to CAES and to agriculture, then you are just the person we are looking for in the CAES Alumni Association. If you are interested in participating in the association, please contact Juli Fields in the Office of College Advancement at 706-542-3390.
We look forward to a great year in 2009. We will continue to guide young people who can develop sound and profitable agriculture in Georgia, and we will continue to connect CAES with alumni and friends across the state, nation and world. Thank you to everyone who makes that possible though financial support and donations of time and talents!
Sincerely,
Cecil R. Spooner, BSA – Vocation Ag, '53
