Southscapes Spring 2008

Development

Reflection and rejoicing in a new year

The end of the year 2007 brought time spent with family and friends, as well as a chance to step back, take stock of our blessings and say thanks. The Office of College Advancement family has a lot to be grateful for this year, including a new staff member and several recent additions to our family of scholarship donors.

Last fall, we welcomed Johnie Tucker. He grew up on a peanut farm outside Smithville, Ga., in Lee County and graduated from CAES in 1999. Before joining our staff, Tucker worked for seven years as a northeast Georgia territory sales manager with tobacco company Swisher International, Inc. He worked in our office when he was a UGA student. We're glad to have him back.

Retired agronomy professor Attie Fleming joined our donor family. He established the Dr. Attie A. Fleming Scholarship to benefit our soil science students. This endowment will help award a scholarship to students with outstanding academic records and a commitment to leadership and community service. Made using a charitable gift fund established by Fleming, this fund will provide a legacy to his career and his desire to help students achieve their goals.

CAES turfgrass breeder Wayne Hanna has established the Tift Cultivar Study Abroad Scholarship. This fund will honor grass cultivars developed on the campus in Tifton. These grasses have had a major impact on agriculture, recreation and food production around the world.

Through a gift of appreciated stocks, Hanna realized his goal to help students learn about the global impact of the agricultural industry. His gift also supports the Deans' Promise, the college's commitment to helping students have a study abroad experience during their college career.

A bequest gift will assist the academic pursuits of our students through the creation of the Paula and Heck Dodson Endowment. This planned gift is possible because of the Dodsons' desire to help young people gain valuable skills that will lead to a long, productive career in Georgia's agricultural industry.

Our friends at Fieldale Farms created three new scholarships that honor company and industry leaders. The William Lee Arrendale, the Thomas A. Arrendale and the Joe S. Hatfield Student Enhancement Endowments in Poultry Science recognize the significant contributions of these poultry pioneers. The endowments will also help the poultry science department enhance student-learning opportunities. The recipients will receive scholarships, travel expenses to professional meetings, internships and other educational experiences. Industry supporters like Fieldale Farms help prepare our students for bright futures as leaders in their fields.

There are so many ways to support the educational experience of CAES students. If you have ideas you'd like to share, let us hear from you.

Sincerely,

Rob Cooper, CAES Director of Development
