Student-athlete balances food science and floor exercises

CAES sophomore Marcia Newby credits a half-price gym deal for her position on the University of Georgia Gym Dogs.
"My mom and I didn't know anything about gymnastics before I got started," said Newby, a native of Virginia Beach, Va. "One of my neighbors had a deal where if you bring a friend to gymnastics, you get half off your tuition, and I was the friend."
Newby started gymnastics at the age of six and was introduced to Georgia gymnastics by former UGA Gym Dog Cory Fritzinger. She is now a member of the team that has won the national championship for the past three years in a row. In all, the Gym Dogs have won eight championships and are known across the world of college gymnastics as the team to beat. Newby has the ring to prove she was part of it.
In addition to practice four days a week and gymnastics meets on weekends, Newby studies applied biotechnology with an emphasis on food science.
"I've always been interested in food and the science behind it," says Newby, an avid watcher of the Food Network's "Unwrapped." "It's all about manipulating foods and flavorings. And the classes are interesting and different from the norm."
Newby is debating whether to pursue a career in food science because it's her second love. Her first love is medicine, orthopedic and sports medicine, in particular.
"My ultimate goal is to go to medical school after I graduate, but I'm still unsure," Newby said. She is sure of her dedication to the Gym Dogs.
"I want us to win nationals again for the fourth time in a row," she said. "Especially since the championship is at home this year." The 2008 NCAA gymnastics championship will be held at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens on April 24.
"I love competing at home and getting the student section involved in the routines," Newby said. "My favorite event is floor because I love the dance part and getting the crowd hyped up."
In addition to her UGA student-athlete accomplishments, Newby was on the United States National Gymnastics Team and participated in the 2004 Olympic trials camp. She didn't go to the Olympics, but she has no regrets and loves where she is at in her gymnastics career.
"College gymnastics is much more fun and less time consuming," Newby said. "Our team is very close, and we have game nights and hang out when we don't have practice. Our coach (Suzanne Yoculan) is all about team chemistry."
Although team spirit is important in college sports, rivalries play a big part in the competition as well.
"Alabama has always been our biggest rival," she said, "but Florida is moving up on the list. We want to win the SEC championship this year, too."
Being a student-athlete takes dedication and discipline. On and off the uneven bars, Newby manages to balance it all quite well.
