Plant Pathology Learning Module

Overview

This module presents basic concepts and principles of plant pathology and methods of using plant science investigation with clients. It includes information on appropriate sample collection and submission. Additional resources are provided.

Unit 1: Basic Plant Pathology

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts of plant pathology in terms of parasite, pathogen, abiotic disease, biotic disease, signs, and symptoms.
  • Define host and environment.
  • Explain how plant, host, and environment interact according to the definition of plant disease triangle.
  • Distinguish characteristics of growth, reproduction, and dispersal of different plant pathogen groups.
  • Identify plant problems.
  • Select appropriate preventative methods for plant problems.
  • Predict the threshold for a problem in terms of aesthetics and economics.
  • Relate appropriate Integrated Pest Management strategies to plant problems.

Unit 2: Plant Science Investigation

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Communicate with the client.
  • Prepare for sample collection.
  • Record observations of the plant problem.
  • Choose appropriate submission procedures and processes.
  • Collect a sample for diagnosis.
  • Identify appropriate submission method and procedure using the DDDI system.
  • Interpret diagnosis in terms appropriate for the client.
  • Recommend a solution appropriate for the client.
