Founded
- First established
as the Georgia Experiment Station in 1888 as a result of the federal Hatch Act.
- Early
research focused on fertilizers and soil erosion.
- The deep farrow method
of planting winter oats, pioneered here around 1900.
- The first formulated feed
diets for dairy and beef cattle in Georgia were discovered in Griffin in the
early 1900s.
- Numerous crop varieties have been bred by Griffin scientists including
Empire cotton, released in 1942, which had a major impact on cotton growers in
the state.
Location
- Located 40 miles south of Atlanta, the UGA Griffin Campus lies in the heart
of one of the nation’s fastest growing areas.
- Just 30 miles south of Atlanta’s
Hartsfield International Airport, the campus is easily accessible by visitors
across the nation and the world.
Size
- The main campus contains 123 acres
- Also included is
the 60–acre Research and Education Garden off Ellis Road.
- Four outlying
research farms, the Dempsey Farm, the Westbrook,
the 204-acre Bledsoe and 80-acre Beckham Farm complete the campus properties.
