Tifton Campus: News & Events
Agricultural and Environmental Awareness Days
Spring 2008
More than 900 third-graders from Tift, Berrien, Cook, Lowndes and Ben Hill counties toured 38 learning stations at the UGA Tifton Agricultural and Environmental Awareness Day May 1. They dug in the dirt and looked to the sky and pretty much learned about everything in between.
"These kids, many of them, are growing up with no knowledge of where food comes from. This gives them an experience to see and to see the things done to help the environment," said Benjie Baldree, a campus research coordinator who helped organize the event.
The kids planted seed, too. They will return in the fall as fourth-graders to see the mature plants and to learn more about them.
"We are in the business of education," said Joe West, the UGA Tifton campus assistant dean. "We have so many talented, motivated people who work here. This program and the people who dedicate their time are a window for these kids to see how their food and fiber are made. You never know what positive things can happen by just reaching out and sharing this type of experience."
