October 1, 2008 — The third annual Southwest District Recruitment Event drew more than 200 people – mostly students and their parents – to the University of Georgia Tifton campus Sept. 23 to learn more about the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the many career opportunities available to its graduates.

"Our college is at record enrollment now, but we welcome even more," said J. Scott Angle, UGA CAES dean and director. "Due to the importance of agriculture in our state and its growing demand for a well-trained workforce, we will continue to support events like this in an effort to draw the best and the brightest from around the state to our college and to tell them more about us and the many career opportunities available to them."

CAES offers studies in plant and animal sciences. But students can also study business, communications, engineering, food science, the environment, medicine, law, biology and other fields in the college, too.

The door to UGA can seem far away for rural students in Southwest Georgia, said Laura Perry Johnson, the district's UGA Extension 4-H program coordinator who spearheads the event.

"The counties in the Southwest District were the least represented at UGA with the least applications and admissions," she said.

But that's changing, she said. The event has grown each year. "We're excited because we know that more kids are now going to UGA from this district and many more know about the opportunities they can have there."

"We are able to showcase academic programs and provide admissions and financial aid information to students and parents without them making the trip to Athens," said Brice Nelson, CAES student recruitment coordinator. "This program works because of the grassroots effort by the county UGA Extension personnel, the Tifton campus faculty and staff and the UGA admissions office in Tifton."

The earlier a student begins preparing for college the better, Nelson said.

"Transfer and high school students need to be aware of the admissions process, take appropriate classes, be aware of deadlines and realize that there are individuals at UGA who can assist them if they have questions. This event allows us to connect with these students and answer many of their questions."

The event is organized by Johnson, Nelson, Erin Womack, the UGA Campus academic coordinator, Carey Clinton, UGA assistant admissions director in Tifton, Tino Johnson, UGA assistant admissions director for CAES and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, Lynn Davis, Turner County UGA Extension 4-H agent, Deron Rehberg, Grady County UGA Extension 4-H agent, and Susan Reinhardt, UGA Tifton K-12 outreach coordinator.
