Tifton Campus: Students

Southwest District Recruitment Event

UGA to hold recruitment event Sept. 3 in Tifton, Ga.

August 12, 2009 — The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences not only sets students on successful paths and careers in plant and animal sciences, it also prepares them for careers in business, communications, engineering, food science, environment, medicine, law, biology and other fields, too.

High school or college transfer students in southwest Georgia can easily learn more about what CAES can offer them by attending the Southwest District Recruitment Event Sept 3 at 5:30 p.m. in Tifton, Ga.

Located at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center, the event will include a general session with information on CAES, its Tifton campus, financial aid and admission policies. College leaders and representatives from all its departments and disciplines will be available, too, to talk with students and parents.

"This event has grown over the past four years and has a lot of important information for interested high school and transfer students," said Erin Womack, the UGA Tifton academic program coordinator. "This event is almost the only resource for students in southwest Georgia to learn about UGA and our college."

CAES students have the highest placement rate in graduate or professional school for any UGA college, said J. Scott Angle, CAES dean and director. When compared to graduates from other UGA colleges, fewer CAES students are still seeking employment six months after graduation, and their starting salaries are the second highest among UGA graduates.

"We have been at record enrollment the past few years, but we still want more of Georgia's best and brightest to see what we can do for them," Angle said. "Though much of our economy has declined, high-paying career opportunities in agriculture remain strong, and CAES is ready to train Georgia's future workforce to take advantage of those opportunities."

Dinner and door prizes will be provided. To sign up, sophomores, juniors and seniors should call the local UGA Cooperative Extension office at (800) ASK-UGA1. Or call (229) 386-3414. College transfers students should call (229) 386-3528.

Successful Southwest District recruitment event

September 9, 2009 — More than 200 area high school, college transfer students, parents and guidance counselors learned firsthand the many opportunities and careers the University of Georgia can offer them at the 4th annual UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Southwest District Recruitment Event Sept. 3.

Located at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center, the event included a dozen exhibits and a general session with information on UGA, CAES, its Tifton campus, financial aid and admission policies. College leaders and professors from all its departments and disciplines were available to talk with students and parents.

"This event has continued to grow over the past few years. And has become one of the primary ways students in the area can learn more about what UGA can offer them here, and that the university is not far away. It's right here for them," said Joe West, the CAES assistant dean on the UGA Tifton Campus.

"The event was initiated to address the issue of low student applications to the University of Georgia from the southwest part of Georgia and to make students aware of the diversity of programs offered by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences," said Laura Perry-Johnson, southwest district 4-H program coordinator and one of the event's organizers.

More than 700 people have attended the event over the past four years. During that same timeframe, applications to UGA from southwest Georgia have increased by 30 percent, Johnson said.

"Even more exciting is the fact that these students are actually more likely to enroll at UGA than the general pool," she said.

CAES can set students on successful paths and careers in plant and animal sciences. But it can also prepare them for careers in business, communications, engineering, food science, environment, medicine, law, biology and other fields, too.

"The college has had record enrollment in recent years," said J. Scott Angle, CAES dean and director. "But there is room for more."

CAES students have the highest placement rate in graduate or professional school for any UGA college. When compared to graduates from other UGA colleges, fewer CAES students are still seeking employment six months after graduation, and their starting salaries are the second highest among UGA graduates.
