New Peanut Cultivar Releases in 2007
John P. Beasley, Jr.
There have been seven new peanut cultivars released for the 2007 peanut production season. However, since they are just being released there will not be seed available for commercial production in 2007. All of the new releases will be in Foundation seed increase programs this year. It may be two to three years before there is an adequate seed supply of some of these new cultivars for commercial production. Here are the new releases and a brief description of each.
University of Georgia Releases
Georgia-06G – was tested as GA 011557 and is a medium maturity range cultivar (same as Georgia Green). It has a medium seed size (larger than Georgia Green, smaller than C-99R) and very good resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus. It does not have the high oleic oil chemistry.
Georgia Greener – was tested as GA 011568 and also has a medium maturity range. It has an intermediate, or typical, runner growth habit, seed size similar to Georgia Green, and excellent resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus. It does not have the high oleic oil chemistry.
University of Florida Releases
York – is a late maturing (similar to C-99R and Georgia-02C) cultivar with typical runner growth habit. It has a seed size similar to Georgia Green with excellent resistance to TSWV, white mold, and leaf spot. It is a high oleic cultivar.
McCloud – is a medium maturity cultivar with typical runner growth habit. Its seed size is larger that Georgia Green and ANorden and its main disease resistance is to TSWV. It has the high oleic chemistry.
Florida-07 - has a medium-late maturity range meaning it is later than Georgia Green but earlier than C-99R and Georgia-02C. It has a typical runner growth habit and seed size that is similar to C-99R and Georgia-01R (large-seeded runner). It has good to excellent resistance to TSWV, some white mold resistance, and tolerance to leaf spot. It has the high oleic chemistry.
AgraTech/Golden Peanut Co.
AT 3085A – Just prior to AgraTech being dissolved as a company there were two lines developed by their breeders for which Golden Peanut Co. has acquired the marketing rights. The first release was AT 3081R. This year Golden Peanut Co. is officially releasing AT 3085A. The two cultivars are very similar with the exception that AT 3085A is high oleic. Both have a typical runner growth habit and medium maturity range. AT 3085A has a good level of resistance to TSWV (better than Georgia Green).
USDA-ARS
Attaboy – this is a release from the USDA-ARS breeding program led by Dr. Roy Pittman. It has a maturity range that is medium-late (later than Georgia Green and earlier than Georgia-02C) and a seed size that is medium-large (similar to Georgia-03L and AP-3). It has TSWV resistance that is better than Georgia Green but not as resistant as AP-3, Georgia-02C, and Georgia-03L.
