Conservation Tillage: Cover Crops

Crimson Clover

Photo: Crimson CloverCrimson clover, a winter legume, is an all-around good cover crop. It produces large amounts of residue per acre, fixes nitrogen, is alleopathic, has a good root system and makes a good forage choice. Crimson clover also provides habitat for insect predators like ladybugs, and attracts aphids and honey bees. Some cultivars are preferred for wildlife plots, while others are preferred for cover cropping.

Seed 15-18 lb/A (drilled) or 22-30 lb/A (broadcast); August to September
