Conservation Tillage: Cover Crops

Subterranean Clover

Photo: Subterranean CloverSubterranean clovers are winter annual legumes that can fix up to 200 lbs./A. of nitrogen. It is a self-reseeding species, often used in orchards and vegetable plots because of its soil conditioning and weed-suppression properties, as well as its attraction to beneficial insects. It can be used as a living or dying mulch with vegetables, and does well in orchards or vineyards with low to moderate soil fertility.

Seed Between 12-30lbs/A (depending on seedbed quality and competition). September-late October.
