Contributions for Program Enrichment
Alumni, friends and faculty, please provide financial support to enrich the department’s educational programs. The Agricultural and Applied Economics Improvement Fund supports many events that promote economic learning and the intellectual exchange of ideas. Additional support is needed for the Improvement Fund, as well as, endowments for scholarships, leadership awards, and a distinguished professorship. 2009 J. W. Fanning Distinguished
Professional Award Winners
Allyson (Barnes) Marshall (BSA in honors interdisciplinary studies – agricultural and environmental policy in 2006) is the 2009 J.W. Fanning Distinguished Young Professional Award Winner. She is the southeastern crop area claims manager for the Great American Insurance Company – Crop Division. She manages a staff of 60 supervisors, adjusters, and office staff and oversees the daily processing of claims payments. She audits all claims above a specified dollar threshold to ensure they are completed according to federal crop insurance rules and evaluates high-dollar losses to ensure they are completed correctly. Ally also oversees the Compliance Department and all audits that must be conducted per the USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) annually. She reviews the guidelines and procedures of adjusting risk for each crop required for all crop insurance companies and comments to RMA with all the changes that need to be made in order for her company to properly determine and pay losses based on constantly changing farming methods and practices.
J. Craig Scroggs (BSA in agricultural economics in 1981) is the 2009 J.W. Fanning Distinguished Professional Award Winner. He is a rural business and cooperative specialist with the United States Department of Agriculture in Georgia. He is responsible for providing technical assistance to new and existing cooperative businesses across the state, coordinating the Renewable Energy Program for the agency within the state, and overseeing the Value-Added Producer Grant Program and other loan and grant programs made available through USDA Rural Development. Craig has been recognized by his agency on more than 20 occasions for outstanding performance during his 25 year career. He has served as president of the National Association of Credit Specialists, an employee association of more than 1,300 members. Craig is also the newly elected president of the Agricultural Economics Association of Georgia.

Caroline Portwood is a third-year EEM major who spent the summer of 2009 working as an Agricultural Fellow in Washington , D.C.
