Biographical Sketch

Jack Houston joined the faculty in 1984, teaching Agricultural Price Analysis and Commodity Marketing at the undergraduate/graduate levels, Agricultural Market Structure and Analysis and Consumer Demand theory at the graduate level. He currently teaches Intermediate Microeconomic Theory, Environmental Economics, Futures and Options Markets, and Food Security, Economic Development and the Environment  to undergraduates and continues teaching Market Structure and Analysis at the graduate level. Dr. Houston serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Housing and Consumer Economics graduate program.

Dr. Houston's primary research responsibility is in the area of grains and oilseeds marketing, with an emphasis on the use and exchange of these commodities in the intermediate seed, feed, and food processing markets and resulting industry structural changes. He also has strong interests and ongoing research in the economics of water quality and allocation and related management practices, fisheries marketing, integrated sustainability issues, and international market/trade development. Dr. Houston actively promotes internationalization of the teaching, research, and outreach activities on campus, particularly through leadership roles in the African Studies Institute at the University of Georgia and a study abroad course International Agribusiness Marketing and Management in Xalapa, Mexico.  This course also has a strong Environmental Management component.  He has traveled and presented abroad extensively, including Europe, Africa, and South/Central America. Closer to home, his community activities center around youth soccer - coaching, refereeing, and directing regional, competitive level tournaments (Athens United Soccer).
