Professor Brannen's Career
Stephan J. Brannen received both his undergraduate and Master's degrees at UGA before becoming an assistant professor in 1953. He grew up on a sharecropper's farm.
"I've always been interested in applied economics," Brannen said. "That doesn't mean you're devoid of economic theory. It means you use it to solve real world problems."
Brannen followed in J.W. Fanning's footsteps as department head in 1961. His challenge, he said, was well-rounded: "We needed people, fiscal resources and physical resources."
Under Brannen's guidance, the department's budget went from $85,000 in 1961/62 to in excess of $1.2 million when he retired in 1987. The offices moved from the Poultry Science Building to the second and third floors of the award-winning, newly renovated Conner Hall. And Brannen helped recruit faculty who both cared about students and had unique expertise. The PhD program was added under his leadership.
The aptly named Stephen J. Brannen Student Leadership Fund will provide funds to develop the leadership qualities he exemplified and enrich the educational experiences for the next generations.
