Evan Brown International Economics Scholarship

Evan BrownProfessor Brown's Career

Evan Brown came to UGA in 1963 and taught cooperative marketing and the first economic development course. An excellent teacher, Brown's forte was reaching out to minorities and students from other countries. When integration became federal law, Brown became the first liaison between the department and Fort Valley State, the historically black agriculture college.

Brown is perhaps best remembered for his work with international students. His love of travel and openness to other cultures made this a natural fit for him. His students hailed from Taiwan, South Korea, Greece, Thailand, Nigeria, Zaire, Venezuela, Chile, Japan, the Philippines and other countries.

Evan Brown in 2003"I never had to force myself to go to work," Brown said of his career at UGA. "Every day was a joy."

Brown published five university textbooks and numerous journal articles around the world. The first PhD student in the department, Hsi-Huang Chen, graduated under his tulelage. Chen is now the minister of agriculture in Taiwan. Brown retired in 1986.

The Evan Brown International Study Fund will help others learn what Brown knew so well: that there is much to be learned by experiencing other cultures.
