Awards

Recent Faculty Awards

  • Dr. Yao-wen Huang was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists and will be honored in June at the 2009 IFT Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA.
  • Dr. Casimir Akoh was names the 2009 recipient of the Biotechnology Division Lifetime Achievement Award from the Biotechnology Division of the American Oil Chemists' Society.
  • Dr. Anna V. A. Resurreccion will receive the Bor S. Luh International Award at the 2009 IFT Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA.
  • Dr. Rob Shewfelt received a regional 2008 United States Department of Agriculture Food and Agricultural Science Excellence in Teaching Award at the Annual Meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges held in Chicago, IL, in November, 2008.

  • Dr. Larry Beuchat received a recognition award at the 2008 IAFP annual meeting for the establishment of the Larry Beuchat Young Researcher Award. Each year, this award will recognize an active IAFP Member who has shown outstanding ability and professional promise as a researcher in food microbiology/food safety. The award will consist of a plaque and a $2,000 honorarium, sponsored in 2008 by bioMerieux, Inc.

  • Dr. Ron Pegg was selected as a Lilly Teaching Fellow for the 2007-2009 academic year.
  • Dr. Rakesh Singh was elected a Fellow of the International Food Technologists (IFT).
  • Dr. Akoh received two awards at the 2008 IFT Annual Meeting:
    • the Stephen S. Chang Award for Lipid Science and
    • the Research and Development Award.
  • Dr. Joe Frank received the 2008 Elmer Marth Educator Award at the 2008 annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) in Columbus, Ohio, for outstanding service in education for food safety and food protection.

Recent Staff Awards

  • Anne Morrison received the 2009 CAES Athens Staff Award for Technical Support at the D.W. Brooks Lecture, Oct. 6, 2009. Congratulations, Anne!
  • Ruth Ann Morrow received the 2008 CAES Athens Staff Award for Technical Support at the D.W. Brooks Lecture, Oct. 8, 2008. Congratulations, Ruth Ann, for this much deserved recognition!

Recent Student Awards

  • Ashanty Pina-Rodriguez's paper, “Structured Lipid from Underutilized Amaranth Oil for Possible Infant Formula Application,” was chosen as the second place winner of the Biotechnology Student Excellence Award for 2009. 
  • Jinhee Yi won 2nd place in the Alfred P. Schwan Poster Competition at the 2007 IFT Annual Meeting.
  • The 2008 UGA IFTSA College Bowl team was victorious in the Annual IFTSA Southeast Area College Bowl competition. Teams representing universities from all over the southeast participated in the competition. The team will compete in the national competition at the IFT Annual Meeting.

Birth Annoucement

It is with great pleasure Ruth Ann and Mike Morrow announce the birth of their son Alexander William Victor Morrow. He was born at 5:27 pm, on July 21, 2009. He weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. Congrats to the Morrow family!

Retirement Celebrations

Dr. Manjeet Chinnan, Professor, retired March 31, after 30 years with the department. A retirement reception was held on Friday, May 1, 2009, in the Stuckey Auditorium on the Griffin Campus.

Phillips

 

Dr. Robert D. Phillips, Professor, announced his retirement, effective March 31, after 32 years with the department. A retirement celebration was held in his honor on Friday, July, 10, 2009, in Griffin.

2009 J. G. Woodroof Lecture

Chief Regulatory Officer for The Coca-Cola Company, Dr. Rhona S. Applebaum, was the speaker for the 2009 Wooddroof Lecture.

Thanks to FST faculty, staff, and students and lecture attendees for helping to make this year's Woodroof Lecture a success.

Retirement Reception for Ann Autry

The retirement reception for Ann Autry was held on April 3, 2009.

Congratulations to the UGA Food Science College Bowl Team!

Our College Bowl Team had an undefeated victory in winning the Southeast Regional College Bowl.  The competition and Regional meeting was hosted in Gainesville, FL by the University of Florida on Saturday, March 28, 2009.  This is the third year in a row that the team has won. They will now head to Nationals at the IFT Annual Expo, June 6-9, 2009, Anaheim, CA.

Flavor of Georgia Competition

The Department of Food Science and Technology, along with the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, co-sponsored the Flavor of flavor of georgia logo

Georgia Food Product Contest. The contest is designed to highlight new and innovative Georgia food products and businesses using Georgia agricultural commodities.

 

Caroline Harless was the Grand Prize Winner of the third annual Flavor of Georgia Competition for her Aztec Cheddar cheese.

Senior Julie Laughter serves on the executive board for Alternative Spring Break. She has led trips to West Virginia to help combat rural poverty and Lexington, Ky. to help fight injustices toward animals.

The Food Science department won the People's Choice award for the best decorated table at the annual Griffin campus chili cook-off held in February 2009.
