Recent Faculty Awards
- Dr. Yen-con Hung was the recipient of the 2011 D. W. Brooks Award for Excellence in Research from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Hung was honored at a luncheon following the D. W. Brooks Lecture held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.
- Dr. Yao-Wen Huang received the D. W. Brooks Faculty Award for Excellence in Global Programs at the D.W. Brooks Lecture, Oct. 5, 2010.
- Dr. Ron Pegg received the CAES Faculty Early Career Teaching Award at the D.W. Brooks Lecture, Oct. 5, 2010.
- Dr. Anna Resurreccion has been recognized as a 2010 Distinguished Research Professor at The University of Georgia, effective July 1, 2010. The appointment of Distinguished Research Professor is intended to recognize a sustained record of outstanding research or other creative, scholarly accomplishments and to provide the impetus for continuing high achievement.
- Dr. Louise Wicker has been elected as Fellow to the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST).
- The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers named Dr. Manjeet S. Chinnan winner of the 2009 IAFIS-FPEI Distinguished Food Engineering Award. The award was presented June 24 in Reno, NV, at the 2009 ASABE Annual International Meeting.
- Dr. Casimir Akoh was named the 2009 recipient of the Biotechnology Division Lifetime Achievement Award from the Biotechnology Division of the American Oil Chemists' Society.
- Dr. Rakesh Singh was elected a Fellow of the Institue of Food Technologists (IFT) and received the Elizabeth Fleming Stier Award at the 2009 IFT Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA.
- Dr. Yao-wen Huang was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists and was honored in June at the 2009 IFT Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA.
- Dr. Larry Beuchat, Emeritus Professor, was the recipient of the Honorary Life Membership Award at the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) 2009 Annual Meeting. The award recognizes IAFP members for their dedication to the high ideals and objectives of IAFP and for their service to the Association.
- Dr. Anna V. A. Resurreccion received the Bor S. Luh International Award at the 2009 IFT Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA.
- Dr. Ron Pegg received the Division Outstanding Volunteer in Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods at the 2009 IFT Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA.
- Dr. Yao-wen Huang was elected President of the National Phi Tau Sigma, the Honor Society for Food Science and Technology for 2008-2010
- Dr. Ron Pegg was selected as a Lilly Teaching Fellow for the 2007-2009 academic year.
Recent Staff Awards
Carl Ruiz received the 2010 CAES Athens Staff Award for Skilled Trades at the D.W. Brooks Lecture, Oct. 5, 2010.
- Anne Morrison received the 2009 CAES Athens Staff Award for Technical Support at the D.W. Brooks Lecture, Oct. 6, 2009. Congratulations, Anne!

- Ruth Ann Morrow received the 2008 CAES Athens Staff Award for Technical Support at the D.W. Brooks Lecture, Oct. 8, 2008. Congratulations, Ruth Ann, for this much deserved recognition!
Recent Student Awards
- Ashley Hart was chosen as a finalist in the 2010 IFTSA - PTS Undergraduate Research Competition (URC). She presented her work orally and in a poster session to compete for the final award at the 2010 IFT.
- Puranjay Priyadarshi won the second place award at the Product Development Poster competition at the 2009 IFT Annual Meeting. The title of his poster was “Effect of Various Added Proteins on the Cooking Quality of Pork Sausages.”
- Allison Bechman's presentation was chosen as the third best overall presentation in the Student Research Competition at the Georgia Nutrition Council meeting held in February, 2010, in Atlanta, GA.
- Ashanty Pina-Rodriguez's paper, “Structured Lipid from Underutilized Amaranth Oil for Possible Infant Formula Application,” was chosen as the second place winner of the Biotechnology Student Excellence Award for 2009.
Departmental News
Congratulations to the UGA Food Science College Bowl Team!
Winners of the 2010 IFTSA National College Bowl competition at the 2010 IFT Annual Meeting and Expo, July 17 - 20, 2010, Chicago, IL.
Our College Bowl Team had an undefeated victory in winning the Southeast Regional College Bowl, thus securing the UGA team's fourth consecutive southeastern win. The competition and Regional meeting was hosted in Normal, AL, by Alabama A & M on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The team will now head to Nationals at the 2010 IFT Annual Meeting and Expo, July 17 - 20, 2010, Chicago, IL.
