Service Learning

The UGA Horticulture Department is recognized on campus and throughout the Athens community as an active participant in community projects. Throughservice-learning, horticulture students combine the act of service with the process of learning, gaining better understanding of their world and themselves, UGA Horticulture students participate in numerous service projects through Horticulture Club projects, regular course activities and special service-learning events. Recent projects have included: Hands on Athens, Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery Cleanup, Martin Luther King Day of Service, and Pinewoods Community Tree Planting.

Other related service programs of interest to horticulture students

The FOCUS program is a partnership between the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) at the University of Georgia and several local school districts. The main thrust of this program is to partner UGA students with elementary teachers to assist in the teaching of science in grades K-5.

CLASE coordinates opportunities for UGA students to tutor and mentor Athens-area Latino K-12 students. Since Fall 2004, hundreds of university students have provided tutoring and social and academic support at venues such as the Pinewood Library branch, Garnet Ridge Boys & Girls Club, and Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela, as well as at local schools. University participants are able to receive academic credit for their service learning via a class by CLASE Co-Director Dr. Paul Matthews, but more importantly, they gain direct, hands-on experience with Latino students and families, helping dispel stereotypes and prepare them for serving a diverse Georgia upon graduation.
