What do you like most about your job as a Beef Cattle Extension Specialist?

JD: Helping folks achieve their goals for success is what drives my day.  Cattle is all I know. Privileged beyond measure to serve the producers in Georgia in whatever capacity.  

Tell us more about the Calhoun Bull Evaluation Sale to be held on December 1st.

JD: It’s going to be a big day. 100 head will be available at auction ring side and at LiveAuctionTV. As usual we will have high quality Angus, Charolais, Herefords, SimAngus, and Simmental. On behalf of the Calhoun Bull Evaluation consignors, we would like to invite you out. Please let us know if we can add you to our mailing list for a catalog.

What do you want bull buyers to know about the bulls that are going to be offered in the sale?

JD: There will be good quality of course, but there will be something for everyone. Of course calving and growth, but there will also be genetics that can have great impact in carcass merit or in making solid replacements.

Where would you like to see the Georgia beef industry in 5 years, and how do you think the folks on the Beef Team can help producers achieve some goals to get there?

JD: The majority of the state will be marketing reputation feeder cattle that have been weaned, vaccinated and have full traceability. Producers doing this now are making $80.00 per head more than the reported market implementing these simple management strategies. The Beef Team can field questions, create networks, and support marketing programs such as the Georgia Beef Challenge and the newly developed Georgia Verified Program.
