History
'Southland' was released in 1967 by N. Loomis of the U.S.D.A. 'Southland' was selected from a cross of 'Thomas' x seedling of 'Topsail'. 'Southland' was notable for its high sugar content and good productivity.
Comments
'Southland' is an older cultivar that is no longer commonly planted. 'Southland's' most notable attributes in this test were its dry stem scars and strong muscadine aroma. Flavor was very good when berries were fully ripe. Unfortunately, berry size is small to medium and skins are very tough. 'Southland' would be a good choice for a homeowner looking for a cultivar with very aromatic fruit with a strong muscadine flavor. Berry size and quality are not good enough for commercial vineyards.
