History

'Regale' was released in 1981 by C. Williams of the USDA and North Carolina State Univ. 'Regale' was selected from the cross 'Hunt' x 'Magnolia' as a red wine and juice cultivar.

Comments

'Regale' is different from many other muscadines. The flesh is soft and juicy, and the flavor distinct. Productivity was very high, to the point of overbearing. The berries pick with a very wet scar and this, along with the sharp flavor, makes them unsuitable for fresh use. Some years the sugar content of the berries was lower than desired, and for this reason I don't recommend it over 'Noble'.
