Shade Gardening Symposium
Carroll County Master Gardeners are sponsoring a Shade Gardening Symposium on Saturday, September 25 from 9:00am until 1:00pm at the “Ag Center” located at 900 Newnan Rd., Carrollton, Georgia. Directions
“Made For The Shade”
Presented by Erica Glasener
Erica will be the keynote speaker on the main stage, in the great hall. Her topic is about designing a garden with combinations that offer interesting foliage, texture and color for many months of enjoyment.
Living and gardening in Atlanta, Georgia, Erica writes a bi-weekly column on plants and garden design for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She is the co-author with Walter Reeves of “The Georgia Gardener’s Guide” (revised edition published in 2004) and ”Month-By-Month Gardening in Georgia” (revised edition published in 2006). Her newest book is “Proven Plants for Your Southern Garden”, that was recently published. After she speaks, there will be a half hour break, where Ms. Glasener will autograph her new book, and give a personal hello to her fans. The price of her book is $25. She takes cash or checks. You may wish to reserve a copy on the registration application.
I know you don’t want to miss hearing what this lady has to say. As you may remember, Erica hosted “A Gardener’s Diary” on Home and Garden Television (HGTV) for fourteen years. In her role as host, she interviewed gardeners from all walks of life across the United States. Her curiosity about the impulse that drives people to garden, as well as her enthusiasm about plants, makes her a natural at facilitating the stories gardeners want to hear. She is one of Emory University’s favorite instructors on plants and design.
But wait, there’s even More . . .after her presentation.
You are personally invited to choose two specialty classes given by very knowledgeable speakers, about specific shade loving plants. These will be located in the individual classrooms located around the “Agricultural Center”. It will be a tough choice. You’ll have 6 different sessions to choose from. Ticket sales are limited and are on a first come, first serve basis. Session titles are “Native Azaleas and Their Companions” – Ernest Koone, owner of Garden Delights Nursery, “Hellebores and Companion Plants” – Carol Hight, Native Plant Soc., Master Gardener, “Native Plants for the Shade Garden” – Wendell Hoomes, Native Plant Soc., Master Gardener, “Hostas, Queen of the Shade” – Jack Driskell, of Smith Gilbert, Cobb Co. Master Gardener, “Small Yard, Huge Impact” – Becky Hill, Private Gardener Extraordinaire, “Shade Loving Conifers" – Mike Francis, owner of Maple Ridge Nursery.
All morning there will be a “Shade Plant Marketplace” provided by many vendors who specialize in the Shade Garden. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase the newer varieties of hosta, hydrangea, Japanese maples, etc., as well as other garden wares. Many have already donated several items that visitors can win as door prizes, during the first break. Carroll County Master Gardeners will also be available for one-on-one consultations, in the main presentation hall, during the break and between classes. Please write your questions on your registration form, so that we can better research it ahead of time, and have someone ready with an answer.
Tickets are $10 for admission. (Sorry, no credit cards). Remember, there are only a limited amount of tickets. Mail your registration and check soon, to the address on the application. We’ll send confirmation when we have processed your application to your e-mail address, or if you have no e-mail, we’ll call you. You can either pick up your tickets at the door on show day, or enclose a self addressed stamped envelope. You’ll find a copy of the Symposium Registration Application and driving directions, on our website which is http://www.ugaextension.com/carroll/, or pick one up at the front desk in the Ag Center office. Though we’ll have parking attendants on duty, you may wish to carpool.
We have been so delighted to hear such positive feed-back from our previous workshop attendees. We’re really looking forward to seeing many of you again. Write to us later and tell us what you thought of this new style event.
