BUFFALO CREEK
by Nalda Weaver
Buffalo Creek is a special place
Where I go to catch my breath,
A retreat from computers and everyday stress,
Where I regain my mental health.
There's a trail that meanders uphill and down,
A creek you can wade in and wander,
Wildflowers and wildlife that delight my eye,
A bench to sit on and ponder.
My favorite spot is the little log cabin,
That sits on the side of the hill,
Where I can play house and pretend to be back
In the days of the old pioneers.
An herb garden blooms by the cabin door.
With old-fashioned fragrances sweet,
There's a porch you can sit on and daydream a while,
And rest from the summer heat.
Once Indians may have camped here,
Once the plow tilled the soil,
Once cotton and corn grew abundantly,
Once long ago settlers toiled.
Today the groups of boys and girls
Come eagerly to learn,
About the woods and nature's ways,
And their generation's turn.
When life gets hard and I need some peace,
I go there my soul to seek,
I am soothed by the calm I find there.
By the banks of Buffalo Creek.
