“Shady Characters ~ Exciting Perennials for the Shade Garden”

Mr. Harold McDonell will be the guest speaker at the February 14, 2012 Backyard Association Meeting to be held in the new meeting room at the Coweta County Extension Office.  Mr. McDonell lives in South Fayette County with his wife where he retired after a 35 year career at BellSouth.  He is a long time member of the Georgia Perennial Plant Association and holds life memberships in both the American Hemerocallis Society and the American Hosta Society.  He has held multiple positions within each organization and is an active member to date.  Additionally, he has been a member of the Daylily Society of Greater Atlanta since 1976 and presently sits on their board of directors.

Mr. McDonell grew up on a farm in Talbot County where he cultivated a love for plants of all kinds, a love instilled in him by both of his parents as well as his maternal grandmother who lived right next door. Her extensive vegetable and ornamental gardens allowed him to expand his love and knowledge of gardening.  His interest in shade plants grew after joining the Georgia Hosta Society in 1986 and where he currently sits on the board.  He learned there that all shade plants, not just Hostas, are of great interest to its members.

The Backyard Association, sponsored by the Coweta County Extension Master Gardeners Volunteers, is a free seminar held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Extension Office located at 255 Pine Road in Newnan. Please call the Extension Office at (770) 254-2620 for reservations and to register for door prizes.
