University of Georgia Cooperative Extension in Dougherty County provides a variety of educational programs and client services to the residents of our county.  We are dedicated to helping people find answers to questions related to the following areas

UGA Extension is a statewide educational organization funded by federal, state and local governments that brings research-based education directly to individuals, families and communities.

Through a partnership between Dougherty County and UGA Extension, current unbiased research-based information is provided to our community. We invite you to contact us at (229) 436-7216 or visit our office at 125 Pine Avenue in Downtown Albany.

We are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., we are closed from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch.

  • Mar 28 Homeowner Landscape Basics Lunch & Learn Get the lowdown on your landscape! Join us every 4th Thursday of the month from February to May for this free online program from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Get insights to make the most out of your landscape. Topics covered include: plant for the place, common landscape plants, pruning, & turf. Register for one session, or all four in the series!

  • Mar 29 Apple Grafting Workshop In this workshop attendees will learn the process and techniques to successfully graft apple trees. We will walk you through the process of marrying scion and rootstock. Participants will be provided with 5 semi-dwarf rootstock (G210) which will mature to a perfect sized tree (10-15') for most people to manage. Numerous scion varieties will be available to select from. Many heirloom, disease resistant and even Georgia varieties on hand which will range in ripening windows from June - November. Available varieties will range in use from drying, sauce, cooking, cider, fresh eating or a combination. Grafting knives, parafilm and labels will be available for use. By attending you will join the University of Georgia's efforts to preserve and restore these historic apple cultivars.

  • Mar 30 4-H Horse Judging Clinic 2024 Gain valuable insight into horse judging and practice judging ranch horse classes. Clinic consists of three hands-on sessions and one classroom session to help both novice and experienced youth with horse judging. Optional reasons critique following the clinic. This opportunity is open to 4-H and FFA youth participants. Ranch Horse Riding Clinic to follow after lunch as additional opportunity.

Every year does not conform to the "average," so you should use your own judgment about advancing or delaying the time for each job, depending on weather conditions.
  • Native Plants for Georgia Part I: Trees, Shrubs and Woody Vines (B 987) This publication focuses on native trees, shrubs and woody vines for Georgia. It is not our intent to describe all native species — just those available in the nursery trade and those that the authors feel have potential for nursery production and landscape use. Rare or endangered species are not described. Information on each plant is provided according to the following categories: Common Name(s)/Botanical Name/Family, Characteristics, Landscape Uses, Size, Zones and Habitat.
  • Time Management: 10 Strategies for Better Time Management (C 1042) Learn 10 strategies for better time management, including knowing how to spend your time, setting priorities, using planning tools, getting organized, scheduling, delegating, and avoiding procrastinating, wasting time, and multitasking.
  • Your Household Water Quality: Odors in Your Water (C 1016) Homeowners sometimes experience unpleasant odors in their household water. In many cases, the exact cause of the odor is difficult to determine by water testing; however, this publication provides a few general recommendations for treating some common causes of household water odors.
