Echols County Youth Awarded at 4-H District Project Achievement

EATONTON, GA- Eight Echols County 4-H'ers traveled to Rock Eagle for the 2011 4-H Southwest District Junior/Senior Project Achievement. The weekend is designed to challenge 7th through 12th graders with a fun competition that builds public speaking, researching, and record keeping skills. All Echols County youth placed in the top ten.

Participants choose among one of over 60 topic areas to research, prepare a presentation, and complete a portfolio. Topics range from wildlife to muffins to performing arts. Portfolios require the 4-H'ers to participate in activities throughout the year relating to their project areas, keep records on that participation, and compile a three to five page portfolio to demonstrate 4-H and project involvement. Portfolios must also demonstrate participation in community service and leadership activities in their community and state. Participants present their portfolios and presentations, while also having the opportunity to enjoy a dance, entertainment, and games throughout the weekend. Nearly 400 youth were in attendance at this year's Southwest District Junior/Senior Project Achievement.

Echols County youth participating in this year's Junior/Senior Project Achievement were as follows: Emily Borchert, who placed eighth in 7th grade Performing Arts; Miranda Carter, who placed second in 7th grade Horse Project; Morgan Corbett, who placed second in 8th grade Crafts; Cassie Herring, who placed fifth in 7th grade Performing Arts; Kyle Herring, who placed second in Senior Pork Production; Alexis Rivera, who placed second in 8th grade Performing Arts; Caitlin Sandlin, who placed second in 7th grade Forestry; and Matt Pearson, who placed ninth in Senior Workforce Prep. Justin Shealey, Echols County Agriculture Agent, Lee Walker, Echols County 4-H volunteer, and Faye Pearson, Echols County 4-H program leader also attended the trip with the youth.

Cloverleaf District Project Achievement for fifth and sixth graders will be held at Sumter County Middle School in Americus on Saturday, March 19. All Echols County fifth and sixth graders are invited to compete, but the registration deadline is February 25. Please contact Faye Pearson at 559-5562 or pearsonf@uga.edu for more information on Project Achievement or other 4-H events.
