UGA Cooperative Extension

Fayette County Extension Office:
4-H Youth Development
Teen Leadership Certification

Many organizations and programs need volunteers or a lot of staff to conduct a successful event. 4-H is unique because we train teenagers to be certified leaders and give them CPR training. They are then able to assist in many of the activities that Fayette County 4-H participates in throughout the year.

4-H in ActionIf you are a teenager or you know someone who is and would like to get involved, please complete the teen leader application below and either mail it or drop it by the Extension Office.

Teen Leader Application

Teen Leader Training programs are held at different times throughout the year. If you are interested in attending a program, please contact the Extension Office.

What is a Teen Leader?

Of the many opportunities in Georgia 4-H to develop leadership, one of the most positive experiences is the opportunity for older 4-H’ers to mentor younger 4-H’ers and other youth by serving as teen leaders in the county program and also at district and state events.  Teen leaders have specific responsibilities and leadership roles.  A good teen leader can be the lifeline of the county 4-H program and 4-H leaders.

Teens must complete the teen leader certification in order to assist in any county 4-H programs that require overnight stay. It is also highly recommended for any teen that wishes to assist in any day events through the county program.

Who Can Be A Teen Leader?

Any active and responsible 4-H’er can serve as a teen leader.  Counties determine who can be teen leaders for in-county functions.  For overnight events, it is recommended teen leaders to be three to four years older than the 4-H’ers they are chaperoning.  For day events (such as Cloverleaf DPA), mature 4-H’ers who are closer in age are acceptable because it is a good way to teach them responsibility.

Teen leaders at camp can serve as a very positive bridge between a Cloverleaf 4-H’er and the adult in the cabin.  A young 4-H’er will often seek out someone closer to their age than an adult they do not know well.
