UGA Cooperative Extension
Fayette County Extension Office:
Volunteers
Adults want to join in the fun and educational opportunities too! Join our Volunteer
Program! Volunteer leaders are a crucial part of the growth and execution of our programs and have the opportunity to assist in a variety of ways. Although most people think of volunteers working with youth, Fayette County Extension also has many volunteers that work with other program like the Certified Master Gardeners. Volunteer leaders must be at least 18 years of age, agree to be properly trained, and if selected, abide by the Georgia Volunteer Guidelines.
All volunteers are asked to complete an application and go through a screening process. This application and process has been created and is in place to protect the volunteers and all the people that are involved. Start the process by completing the application below and returning it to the Extension Office.

Policy Guidelines for Leaders Working with Youth - Effective August 1, 2008
All adults supervising youth in Extension programming will be screened using the process listed below. We suggest that all volunteers involved in Fayette County Extension programs undergo this process as a further step to insure your safety and minimize your liability.
Supervising is defined as an adult who directs a youth's (other than their personal child's) behavior during an activity or event. All adults with supervisory roles must be screened. UGA Cooperative Extension employees have been screened through the employment process.
The screening procedure is:
- Completion of an application (click here for application)
- Applications are returned to the Extension office for reference checks prior to faxing to UGA
- Applications must include an Extension Agent's contact name and e-mail address.
- Documentation of two references have been checked and the references recommended the volunteer (click here for reference form)
- References, in most cases, are checked prior to submitting applications to UGA.
- If two references do not recommend the volunteer to work with youth, the Extension member will send a letter explaining that the volunteer has not been approved. An application will not be sent forward if two references do not make a recommendation.
- The application is faxed to UGA Human Resources. The applications are given to an outside agency where a criminal background check as well as the sex offender registry check
is completed.
- The contact on the application will receive an e-mail accepting or denying the volunteer. This e-mail is printed and placed in the volunteer's file.
- Denied volunteers will also receive correspondence from HR that their application has been denied. This e-mail is printed and placed in the volunteer's file.
- Accepted volunteers sign the Volunteer Agreement (click here for agreement form)
