2012 Charles Bell Memorial Commercial Dairy Heifer Show

The Twelfth Annual Charles Bell Memorial Farm Bureau Commercial Dairy Heifer Show was held on Thursday, February 9th, at the Morgan County Agricultural Center. This year’s show featured thirteen youth participants (eight from Morgan County and Jasper 4-H and five from the Morgan County High School FFA program). These youth exhibited 15 commercial dairy heifers. The exhibitors competed against one another in 3 showmanship classes and 4 weight classes.

The first place exhibitors received a belt buckle with all exhibitors receiving ribbons and cash prizes sponsored by Morgan County Farm Bureau.

In Class 1- 5th, 6th, and 7th grade Showmanship, the results were: First Place, Constance Johnson, Morgan 4-H; Second Place, James Cagle, Morgan 4-H; Third Place, Lawton Harris, Jasper 4-H; Fourth Place, Tim Milam, Morgan 4-H; and Fifth Place, John Milam, Morgan 4-H.

In Class 2- 9th and 10th grade Showmanship: First Place, Will Porter, Morgan 4-H; Second Place, Victoria Cagle, Morgan 4-H; Third Place, Alex Stump, Morgan FFA; Fourth Place, Madison Segrest, Morgan FFA; and Fifth Place, Harley Smith, Morgan FFA.

In Class 3- 11th and 12th grade Showmanship: First Place, Katelin Benkoski, Morgan 4-H; Second Place, Nicole Lingerfelt, Morgan FFA; and Third Place, Lauren Best, Morgan FFA.

The Weight Class winner in classes 4 through 8 belonged to: Lawton Harris, Katelin Benkoski, James Cagle, and Constance Johnson, respectively. Each exhibitor who participated received a cash prize and ribbons with the class winners receiving a new show halter, sponsored by the Morgan County Farm Bureau.

The Grand Champion Heifer for the overall show was the weight Class 8 winner, belonging to Constance Johnson. The Reserve Champion for the overall show was the weight Class 4 winner, belonging to Lawton Harris. The judge for the show was Debra Sires of Grey, Georgia.

2012 Dairy Quiz Bowl

The Morgan County 4-H Junior and Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Teams both finished third place in a very close competition at the 2012 State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest at the Rhodes Animal Science Center on the campus of the University of Georgia. The Morgan County 4-H junior team is composed of 4-Her’s: James Cagle, Constance Johnson, Hunter Moon, Ben Porter, and Will Woodard. The Morgan County Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Team is composed of 4-Her’s: Katelin Benkoski, Victoria Cagle, Jay Moon, and Will Porter. Both teams were coached by Bobby Smith, Morgan County Extension Agent.

2011 Cotton Bowl and Consumer Jamboree (Judging)

This year's competition was held in Conyers with 26 teams and 140 students competing. Morgan County's Junior 4-H team members were James Cagle, Kitty Ligon, Sarah Grey Ligon, Tim Milam, Caroline Schlabach, Will Woodard and Lucy Young. The Morgan County Senior 4-H team members were Victoria Cagle, Cain Bentley, April Grantham, Julia Whitaker and Claire Woodard. They placed 1st in the area contest and will advance to the State 4H Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging contest held at Rock Eagle on December 10th.  The Morgan County Junior team placed 5th in the contest.  Claire Woodard received the award for high judging score and high overall score for the senior contest and placed 4th high individual with her PSA speech score.  Sarah Grey Ligon placed 2nd high individual with her commercial speech score.

The teams were coached by Janet Woodard, Morgan County Extension 4-H agent and Laura Rolader, Morgan County 4-H Program Assistant and Senior 4-H team members.  Each Senior team member developed a computer presentation that they used to teach the study materials to the junior team.  They were also responsible for developing  situations and official reasons for each situation used in practice sessions and for the mock contest.

A special thanks to Mr. Joey Lancaster of United Bank Investment and Trust Services for leading a discussion with team members to help them understand information they might see in their mutual funds situation at the contest.

2011 Morgan County Farm Bureau Goat and Lamb Show

The Morgan County Farm Bureau Lamb and Goat Show was held on Friday night, August 26, at the Morgan County Agricultural Center. There were 21 exhibitors with a total of 14 lambs and 17 goats. Congratulates to:

In Goat Showmanship

Pre-Club (First through Third Grade) Showmanship class: Hunter Kiepper was 1st, Garrett Alliston was 2nd, Timothy Smith was 3rd and Thomas Smith was 4th.
Class 2: Fifth and Sixth Grade Showmanship class: Natalie Baddour was 1st, Brant Kiepper was 2nd, and Mary Beth Smith was 3rd.
In Class 3: Seventh and Ninth Grade Showmanship: McKayla Alliston was 1st, Neil Smith was 2nd, and Kevin Smith was 3rd.

Lamb Showmanship

First and Third Grade class: Dru Hunt was 1st place and Seager Hunt was 2nd place.
Fifth and Eighth Grade Lamb Showmanship class, Ben Porter won 1st place and Will Woodard was 2nd place. In Ninth and Tenth Grade Lamb Showmanship, Claire Woodard was 1st and Will Porter was 2nd.

Promotional Showmanship Class for pre-school children that lead a lamb or goat around the ring and receive a trophy. Receiving trophies were: Catherine Smith, Gabe Allen, Levi Alliston, Macy Alliston and Sarah Proctor.

Market weight classes

Lamb Weight Class #1: Seager Hunt’s lambs first and third and Dru Hunt’s lamb second.
Lamb Weight Class #2: Will Woodard’s lambs placed first and fourth, Claire Woodard’s Lambs placed second and fifth, and Will Porter’s Lamb was third. In
Lamb Weight Class #3: Ben Porter’s lamb placed first and Dru Hunt’s lamb and second. Lamb Weight Class #4: Will Woodard’s lamb placed first, Ben Porter’s lamb placed second, Claire Woodard’s lamb placed third, and Will Porter’s lamb was fourth. In the
Championship Drive, Ben Porter’s winner in Weight Class #3 was named Grand Champion and Will Woodard’s winner in Weight Class #4 was the Reserve Champion.

Goat Weight Class #1: Garrett Alliston’s goat placed first, Hunter Kiepper’s goat was second, Kevin Smith’s goat was third, Thomas Smith’s goat was fourth, and Timothy Smith’s goat was fifth. In Goat Weight Class #2: Natalie Baddour’s goat was first, Timothy Smith’s goat was second, McKayla Alliston’s goat was third, Mary Beth Smith’s goat was forth, and Neil Smith’s goat was fifth. In Goat Weight Class #3: Kevin Smith’s goat placed first, Natalie Baddour’s goat was second, Neil Smith’s goat was third, and Mary Beth Smith’s goat was fourth. In Goat weight class #4: Brant Kiepper’s goat placed first, McKayla Alliston’s goat was second, and Garrett Alliston’s goat was third. In the Goat Championship Drive, Brant Kiepper’s winner in Weight Class #4 was named Grand Champion and Weight Class #1 winner shown by Garrett Alliston was the Reserve Champion.

The Morgan County Farm Bureau sponsors the show and contributes money for all the trophies, plaques, ribbons and cash awards. Matt and Charlie Conner served a delicious dinner for all exhibitors and their families. The Morgan County Extension Office wishes to thank the Morgan County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and President, Larry Sievers, along with Charlie and Matt Conner for their continuing support of our 4-H Programs.

2011 Georgia National Fair Highlights

Morgan County's 6 member lamb show team, Claire and Will Woodard, Will and Ben Porter, Dru and Segars Hunt had a great year. Will Woodard earn the Grand Champion Georgia Bred and Born lamb for the state.  Dru Hunt won showmanship along with Will and Claire Woodard

Claire and Will Woodard exhibiting Simmental heifers, both placed in the top five of their class and Will placed 2nd in beef showmanship. 

Commercial dairy heifer Morgan Co. 4-H'ers were Katelin Benkoski, Nicole Lingerfelt, and Alex Stump. Katelin placed 8th in 12th grade showmanship and Alex Stump placed 6th in 9th grade showmanship. 

MaKayla and Garrett Alliston exhibited market goats.   Levi Alliston competed in the Mutton Bustin’ contest and won 1st place and will compete in an event in Las Vegas.

Claire and Will Woodard both competed in the 4-H Pizza contest, Claire took home the top honor of first place in the senior division.  Claire also competed in the State 4-H Egg Prep contest, placing third in her division.  Will Porter was on the sound crew of Clovers & Co.  and Ashton Prior was member of the cast of this youth performing arts group.


2012 Morgan County 4-H Archery Team

The Archery Program is a part of the Georgia 4-H Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education Program (S.A.F.E.).  The program promotes responsibility, decision-making and identifying realistic, personal goals.  The program strives to make "every kid a winner," and to "make the best better."

The program content provides a framework of knowledge and skills for lifetime participation in recreation, hobbies and careers related to shooting sports and wildlife. The program uses experiential learning and positive interactions with youth and adult role models to help young people develop self-concept, self-assurance and a positive self-image

2011 State Archery Competition

2011 State Archery Competitors

The 2011 Georgia 4-H (Recurve and Compound) Archery Championship was held in May at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Morgan County had three teams and six individuals receive special recognition in the competition. Team 1, Cloverleaf Novice, Thomas Bailey, Levi Gallagher, Caleb Higdon, and Emma Hughes.  Emma Hughes placed 1st in the novice division with Thomas Bailey placing 2nd high individual and Caleb Higdon placing 3rd high individual in the state contest.  Team 1, Cloverleaf Recurve, made up of team members Justin Bryan, Rachael Dickson, Daniel Green and Jack Knowles placed 1st in the contest. Justin Bryan placed 2nd high individual, Daniel Green 3rd high individual and Jack Knowles was 5 high individual in the state competition. 

Sarah Gallagher, Stephanie Pincus and Cole Rolader were recognized as the state winning Senior Recurve team with Stephanie Pincus being recognized for 2nd high individual in the contest. 

Novice participants were Thomas Bailey, Levi Gallagher, Caleb Higdon, Emma Hughes and Curry Wadsworth.  Morgan County Cloverleaf Recurve participants were Justin Bryan, Rachael Dickson, Daniel Green and Jack Knowles.  The Cloverleaf Compound participants were Tim Milam, Jacob Peters, Jonathan Garner, Will Woodard, Brandi Daivdoff, Joseph Thrasher, Keegen Pollard, Elizabeth Lanier, Hayden Snowden, Hannah Knight, Amber Payne, Alex Kuntz, Marcus Solomon, Mike Ivy, Chase McMahon, James Cagle, Jake Furgerson, John Milam, Hunter Jernigan, John Cardwell and William Knight.  The Junior Compound team members were Jackson Mitchell, Victoria Armor, Hattie Ivy, Allison Rolader, Kaitlyn Jenkins, Noah Antour, Jacob Knight, John Wyatt and Mitchel Allen.  The Senior Recurve members included Sarah Gallagher, Stephanie Pincus and Cole Rolader.  The Senior Compound team members were Colton Stone and Corey Hopson

The team which was led by 4-H volunteer coaches: Nick Nicholson, Randy Armor, Dawn Armor, Jeremy Bryan, George Grantham, Neal Hawk, Mike Ivy, Chris Milam, Misty Milam, Keith Phillips, Susan Phillips, Joe Piga, Danny Pincus and Scott Rolader, practiced at least two hours a week for over four months in preparation for the competition. 

The 4-H staff would like to congratulate the teams for a job well done and thank all those involved, coaches and supporters alike, for all the support and dedication.

Morgan County 4-H Poultry Judging-2011

The Morgan County 4-H Junior Poultry Judging team and two Senior 4-H’ers who were individual competitors traveled to Crawford, Georgia on April 11 to compete in the 2011 4-H Area Poultry Judging Contest. 

Bryce Kiepper was recognized as the 3rd high individual in the Senior Division and two Junior team members received recognition for high scores.  Zion Cowart was recognized for being the third high individual in the Junior Division and Emily Dickson was 6th high individual.  4-H’ers who competed on the Morgan county team for the judging event were James Cagle, Zion Cowart, Isabella Cowart, Emily Dickson, Michelle Hogan, Brant Kiepper, Caleb Shelton, Elizabeth Stephens, and Will Woodard. Senior 4-H’ers who competed as individuals were Bryce Kiepper and Claire Woodard.  The Junior team placed third in the contest

Morgan County Junior 4-H Dairy Judging Team Captures First and the Senior 4-H Dairy Judging Team places Third at State Dairy Judging Contest

The Morgan County Junior 4-H Junior Dairy Judging Team finished as Georgia Champions at the State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held on Friday, April 8th in Athens. The junior team was first placing ahead of Gordon, Oconee, and Burke Counties. The Morgan County Junior Team (4th through 8th grade) was composed of team members: Allison Bell, James Cagle, Constance Johnson, Hunter Moon, Jay Moon, Ben Porter, Will Porter, and Will Woodard. Ben Porter was named High Individual in the Junior contest with Constance Johnson finishing 3rd and Will Porter finishing 5th individually.

In the State Senior 4-H Judging Contest Morgan County placed third behind Putnam and Oconee Counties. The Morgan County Senior 4-H Team (8th thru 12th grade) was composed of Katelin Benkoski, Victoria Cagle, Bryce Kiepper, and Claire Woodard. Katelin Benkoski was 2nd high individual in the Senior Contest.

2011 Dairy Quiz Bowl Team

The Morgan County 4-H Junior Dairy Quiz Bowl Teams finished first and third at the 2011 State 4-H Junior Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest

The Contest was held at the Rhodes Animal Science Center on the campus of the University of Georgia. Congratulations to the first place team members: Hunter Moon, Jay Moon, Ben Porter, and Will Porter and the third place team: James Cagle, Constance Johnson, and James Cagle. Both teams were coached by Bobby Smith, Morgan County Extension Agent. The Morgan County Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Team composed of 4-Her’s: Katelin Benkoski, Victoria Cagle, Trey Eaton, and Claire Woodard and also coached by Bobby Smith, finished fourth.

The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl has a scholars bowl, double elimination format where each team begins with five group questions where they can confer and answer questions as a group. Then the competition switches to a fifteen question lightening round where the competitors see who can answer questions correctly the fastest. The team with the most points advances to the next round.

2011 4-H State Council

This annual meeting for Georgia's senior 4-H Club Members was held June 24-26th at Rock Eagle 4-H Center. This year's State 4-H Council featured tons of activities to keep 4-H green. Explored the world of technology, safety, leadership and civic engagement. Morgan County 4-H was represented by Will Porter and Chelsea Low. This exciting event allowed participants to be be part of the action in making decisions, exploring new ideas and creating a better community, country & world. In addition to these activities, there was an annual Iron Clover Competition, a Clovers & Company performance, a Master 4-H Day, and the election of the new Georgia 4-H Board of Directors.

2011 Jr/Sr District Project Achievement (DPA)pic of girl giving speech

Morgan County 4-H members enjoyed a successful weekend DPA competition, receiving special recognition for the Highest Percentage of Winners at the event.  The Northeast District Project Achievement, which took place at Rock Eagle March 4-6, boasted being one of the largest project achievements in the state.  The theme for the weekend conference was “4-H -Through the Ages." The theme and plans for the event were selected and planned by the 2010-2011 Northeast Junior and Senior Board of Directors.  Will Porter, an 8th grade Morgan County 4-H’er is currently serving on the Northeast Junior Board of directors and his fellow board members planned and conducted an exciting weekend for the 775 4-H’ers and leaders who attended DPA. Twenty-Two Junior and Senior 4-H members from Morgan County attended and competed.  All performed very well, several of whom placed at the top of their project areas.

Jr/Sr DPA contestantsSenior 4-H’ers Lauren Cagle, who placed 2nd (qualifying her as a sweepstakes winner) in the Festive Foods for Health Project, and Victoria Cagle who placed 1st in the Dairy and Milk Science project will advance to State competition scheduled to be held, July 19-22 in Atlanta.  Also competing and representing Morgan County well at Senior DPA were Katelin Benkoski, 3rd  place in the Dairy and Milk Science project; Cain Bentley, 2nd place in the Dog Care and Training project, Vivian Guerra, Performing Arts Vocal project; Jeremy Hammonds, Festive Foods for Health project; Bryce Kiepper, Sports project; Skip Lewan, Performing Arts Other Instrumental project; Chelsey Lowe, Performing Arts Vocal project; Leanna Scoggin, Photography project; Julia Whitaker, 2nd place in the Family Resource Management project; and Claire Woodard, 2nd place in the Dairy Foods project.

The Junior 4-H’ers competing at DPA included Victoria Armor, 2nd place in the Target Sports project; Carter Atchison, 2nd place in the Conservation of Natural Resources project; Angel Christopher, 1st place in the Pizza project; April Grantham, 1st place in the Veterinary Science project; Dorian Holloway, 3rd place in the Performing Arts General project; Jay Moon, 1st place in the Dairy and Milk Science project; Ben Porter, 2nd place in the Veterinary Science project; Will Porter, 1st place in the Sheep and Meat Goats project; Summer Stevens, 2nd place in the Horse project; and John Wyatt, 1st place in the Outdoor Recreation project.

Ben Porter was elected and will serve as a 2011-2012 Junior Board of Directors member. He will attend the Georgia Officers Training in June to begin his term on the Junior Board of Directors with an exciting year ahead serving as a District Officer.

The Morgan County 4-H Staff would like to congratulate all 4-H members and their families who worked so hard to be a part of this year’s DPA effort.  A special thanks to Wesley Glosson for serving as a volunteer leader for the event and Catherine Bishop for serving as a teen leader.  The Staff would also like to thank those members of the community who have so graciously donated their time and financial resources to make this a successful process.

MilkMake Contest

On Monday, December 13th, the Morgan County 4-H held the 2010 MilkMake Contest. This contest encourages the development of: skills for utilizing milk creatively, knowledge about the nutritional value and versatility of milk, leadership abilities, character, and citizenship responsibilities

Eight contestants developed and demonstrated their milk shake/smoothie recipes.

Morgan County Farm Bureau Horse Show

The 2010 Farm Bureau Horse Show was held on Saturday, November 13th at the Morgan County Ag Center. It was an amazing day. Ten youth exhibited nine horses and competed in English and Western classes and ended the day competing in the riding and fun contest classes.

Special appreciation is extended to The Morgan County Farm Bureau for
sponsoring the annual free show. Thank you to Lucy Ray, Jasper County Extension Ag
Agent, who served as the judge at the show and Kelly Smith a University of Georgia
student and certified Morgan County 4-H Horse Judging Volunteer, who judged the trail
classes.

The Morgan County 4-H Office would like to express a special thanks to all the
volunteers, parents, the Morgan County Ag Center Board, and Kel-Mac Saddle Club for
their dedication, time, use of equipment, and help in organizing and conducting the

Morgan County 4-H youth recently traveled to Rock Eagle 4-H Center to attend the Georgia 4-H Junior Conference, a 26 hour
event filled with community service projects, classes, workshops, and fun activities. Participants from Morgan County were Victoria Armor, Carter Atchison and Will Porter. Senior 4-H’ers Lauren Cagle and Claire Woodard also attended the event as teen leaders and class instructors.

Rivers Alive

This cleanup event targets all waterways in the State including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches, and wetlands. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources. Rivers Alive is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division's Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Program and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs' Keep Georgia Beautiful Program, in cooperation with Help the Hooch.

Georgia Youth Summit

The fifth Biennial Georgia Youth Summit was held at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia from September 11th - 13th. This three day leadership conference was attended by 716 youth and adults from 133 counties. This Summit is designed to increase awareness of state and local issues, enhance youth-adult partnerships on the local level and equip youth to become active locally in the betterment of their community. The Summit focuses on issues related to Economic Development, Education, Health and Safety. Representatives from Morgan County included Katelin Benkoski, Lauren Cagle, Will Hodge, Jake Miles and Mrs. Debbie Hodge.

While at the Summit, participants discussed community challenges and assets and developed an action plan to address a local issue. Connecting county teams with resources and potential collaborators was a key goal of the Summit. The theme of the Summit was “Take Up the Torch and participants were inspired by speaker Crystal Hardy, who was selected to carry the torch in the 2008 Olympics because of her commitment to developing projects that address needs in her communities.

4-H State Congress, July 20 – 22, Atlanta, GA

For 68 years, Georgia's best 4-H'ers have gathered in Atlanta annually during the State 4-H Congress. Honors are given to 4-H scholarship winners, leadership winners and event winners.

Interested 4-H'ers from throughout the state audition yearly for the limited number of spots in the program.

The group is composed of talented singers, dancers, musicians and stagehands. Several graduates have gone on to careers in the music and entertainment fields on the national level.
